Poem :: thoughts on the branch and root

the branch of Jesse winds around
not content to just stare down
choosing now to cover all
spreading out, not standing tall

the root of Jesse touches earth
running deep and taking birth
sending runners under foot
growing strong, not staying put

despite all efforts to dig it out
uproot the wild and weedy sprout
the leaves and limbs will ever grow
until each soul on earth will know

and in this time of waiting here
we find the light shines, draws us near
when the shadow marks our days
it’s to the sun we set our gaze

when in vain attempts we try
to guide the plant, we always find
the branch of Jesse winds around
not content to just stare down
